Slider Card Tutorial

At a recent Crafty Girls meeting, we made a slider card and I promised to put the tutorial on the blog. Here it is:

1. Take a piece of A5 (half an A4 sheet) cardstock and fold. Punch a half circle from the centre of the top of each half of the cardstock.

2. Cut 2 pieces of the same cardstock approx. 7.5cm x 12cm. These will be the pieces that slide in and out and will be decorated. Only about 2/3rds of the slider will actually show. Decorate these before putting the card together. Make sure your decorations are at the ends of the card that will slide out. They will be opposite ends.

3. Cut another piece of cardstock 9cm x 14cm. This will form the base of the sliding mechanism. Take one of the smaller pieces and line it up at the bottom of the 9x14 card and make a pencil line on the larger card at the top of the smaller piece. Do the same at the opposite end of the card.
4. Find the centre point of each of the lines and measure 2.5 cm from the centre point to each end of the line. Do this at both ends of the card. Using a ruler, draw a line from one end of the card to the other end, matching the pencil marks 2.5 cm from each centre point. You will see a rectangle drawn in the centre of the card now.

5. Using scissors, cut out the small rectangle at each end of this card, making it into an H shape.

6. Take a piece of plastic almost the same width of the centre part of the H and twice as long plus about 2cm. Wrap it around the centre of the H-shaped card and tape it together loosely - it needs to be loose enough to slide around easily.

7. Place the join of the plastic at the left end of the H-shaped card. Tape the right hand slider to the top of the plastic facing you. The decorated side will be upwards. Now place the second slider part underneath the H-shaped inner piece at the left hand end with the decorated part facing up. You will only see a part of this piece. Turn the whole lot over, then tape the second decorated piece to the plastic. Note that you are taping it on the right side and will place it face down on the plastic slider. Check to see that your slider works by pulling each end out.

8. Turn the whole piece over and place DS tape (1/4" wide) along each long side. This is to attach to the inside of the card. Place the H-shaped inner on the card with the half circle punched out piece on the right and stick it down. Check to see that the slider mechanism works by closing the card and pulling the tab that shows through the punched half circle.

9. Place a narrow strip of DS tape along the open side of the card then stick it down. Check the slider again.

10. Finish your card off by decorating the front.

Another year gone!

Last night we had our final meeting for 2012. It is really hard to believe that we have been meeting every month for the last 3 years and everyone is enjoying the group so much that they want to keep on coming!

The theme for the meeting was to bring something that each person had crafted during the year and was very proud of. While we usually focus on paper crafting things at our meetings, the members are a very talented bunch and enjoy a variety of other crafts, which we saw plenty of evidence of at the meeting!

We took pictures of all the creations, and I apologise in advance to the clarity of some of the pictures! It was getting late when we took them...

Barbara started this canvas after the meeting where we all made a canvas. She finished it recently and it looks just stunning. It is going to England in the next few weeks.

Barbara is also a whizz at machine embroidery and she made this beautiful angel - all embroidered on her fantastic machine. It looks stunning with the tealight underneath it and would be a very nice addition to any Christmas Tree this year!

Denise just started coming to our group this year and has shown us that she is a very talented lady. Not only does she do recreational marching, but she is also a great maker of jewellery. Each of the beads in the set is individually attached to a tiny ring, then attached to the chain. It really is beautiful.

Elizabeth is a patchworker extraordinare!

This Advent Calendar was designed and made by Elizabeth. What a work of art. Each heart is a little pocket for hiding little goodies in for each day of Advent.

Wow! was the only thing we could say when Elvina brought these gorgeous dolls out of the large box she struggled in with!

Santa and Mrs Claus stand about 20 inches tall and are fabulous. The patchwork and stitching in these two dolls is amazing, along with the intricate detail of the dolls themselves.

These will become a real family heirloom!

These two cute patchwork baskets were made by Janet, a budding patchworker!

Julie has been busy with her sewing machine as well and made the flowers that adorn this cushion. It is so cute!

Julie also brought along this gorgeous wall hanging that she made for a friend. The picture does not do it justice and it does look beautiful against a wall.

All in all, a successful year for the Crafty Girls and we are all looking forward to more fun next year.

Another workshop

Last night the crafty girls welcomed Julie back to the group after a long absence! Great to see you again Julie.

We each made a canvas based project with a sewing theme. Everyone had the same basic items for the project, but the end results were all unique.

Well done ladies!

On Saturday afternoon we had a workshop focussed on Distress inks.

The girls had a lot of fun playing with distress inks and embossing. Here are the things they made:

A messy but fun afternoon!

Double Dutch

At the January meeting, we made these double dutch cards (courtesy of Splitcoast Stampers for the tutorial).

We used a template that had been cut out using an electronic cutting machine to make it easier for everyone to make the card in a short time. However, the dimensions and instructions were also provided at the meeting.

The cards in the samples shown on this blog were made using printed images from the Card Making World Printable Craftshop. They are in a set called Rag Dolls. The background papers are from the Painted Birdhouses Clip Art at the same website.

The images were cut using Make the Cut Software and the Black Cat Cougar in a print and cut process.

Looking forward to seeing the other examples made by people who were at the meeting!

This is another double dutch card with faux stitching around the die cut label die. The image is another from the Rag Doll Clip Art collection which was cut using the print and cut method.

Denise made this card for her Grandson's 8th birthday. He is a football fan!

Pamela made this card using a peel-off she got when she was in Auckland. I love how the bottom part of the card looks like the cuffs on a shirt!

The colours on this card made by Pamela are just stunning.

Christmas Tags

Barbara and Janet got together tonight and made some Christmas Tags.

Barbara's tags are here. she used distress stains to colour the tags then added embellishments to finish them off. she still needs to add her ribbons to the tags!

Janet's tag is to the left. She used some Christmas paper from K and Company to layer on the tag, then stamped that with a snowman stamp and pine needles stamp from a Tim Holtz Christmas set.

She then cut another tag from some acetate packaging and embossed it in a Christmas embossing folder and layered it on top of the tag using brads to attach it.

The key and padlock were cut from the same K&Compant paper that had been glued to some backing card to make it stronger. The dies were from the Sizzix Alterations dies range. They were then attached to the tag with some fancy yarn.
